Itinerary Description by Day

Day 1: Londorossi Gate to Shira 1 Camp

  • Transfer from your hotel/lodge in Moshi and drive to Shira Gate for performing registration formalities and equipment checkup
  • Start hiking through shrubs and giant heather to arrive at Simba Camp in the evening
  • Have dinner and overnight stay at the camp

Day 2: Shira 1 Camp to Shira 2 Camp

  • Climb into the moorland zone while approaching the volcanic rock formations on Shira plateau
  • The path passes through Shira cathedral which finally leads to Shira 2 camp
  • Have dinner and overnight stay at the Shira 2 Camp

Day 3: Shira 2 Camp to Lava Tower to Barranco Camp

  • Start by ascending up a ridge towards Lava tower which provides an extra day for acclimatization
  • Break for a while in Lava Tower to rest and have lunch
  • Descend down and proceed with the trail to reach at Barranco Camp where we will reach at this point in the evening
  • Have dinner and overnight stay at the camp

Day 4: Barranco Camp to Karanga Camp to Barafu Camp

  • Descend down the base of Barranco wall and proceed with passing through series of hills and valleys leading to Karanga valley
  • The trail reachs out to Karanga camp where you will stop for a lunch break
  • Continue hiking to reach the final destination today at Barafu camp 
  • Take the rest of the evening off preparing for the next day climb
  • It’s advised to sleep as early by around as 19:00hrs

Day 5: Ascend to Uhuru Peak

  • Wake up around 23:00 for having hot breakfast with biscuits and also adding more warm clothes and headlamps 
  • Leave the camp and start heading to the summit by midnight into the glacial zone
  • The path leads to Stella point (5756 m) after a 6 hour walk to arrive at sunrise
  • Have time for photographs and a little rest while at the summit 
  • For climbers who have experienced AMS are advised to start descending, however for those interested can take a round trip along the crater rim to reach Uhuru Peak (5,895 m)
  • Proceed by descending down the mountain to arrive at Mweka Hut (3100m)

Day 6: Mweka Camp to Mweka Gate

  • After a hot breakfast, continue descending through the beautiful green forest to arrive at Mweka gate
  • Take time to show gratitude to the crew by tipping guides, cooks and porters
  • Get awarded with certificates whereby golden certificates are given to hikers who reached Uhuru peak and green certificates for Stella point hikers
  • Retreat back to Mweka village for a drive to Moshi town for resting or airport for a flight back home
