Lying just off the coast of mainland Tanzania, Zanzibar is a fascinating island with a rich history and stunning beaches – a combination that has captured the imagination of visitors for decades. Zanzibar and its sister island Pemba are widely regarded as two of the most glorious islands in the whole of the Indian Ocean.
Zanzibar is an experience all of its own. At it’s heart is the World Heritage Stone Town – a labyrinth of winding alleyways, a bustling marketplace heady with the aroma of spices and displaying skilfully crafted artefacts, beautifully preserved buildings with picturesque carved and studded doors, cathedrals and mosques, and a fascinating array sights that simply have to be seen and photographed.
Out of town are more ‘must sees’. There are spice plantations, where visitors can view cloves, nutmeg, cinnamon, pepper and many other spices in their natural state, and learn about the beginnings of infamous Arab slave trade. Jozani Natural Forest Reserve is home to the rare Red Colobus monkey and other species including the Sykes monkey, small buck, and bushpigs.
Ras Nungwi, a traditional fishing village at the northern end of the island is the dhow building capital of Zanzibar. Here you can see the traditional methods of dhow construction in action. At this northern tip are also beautiful beaches and coral reefs – magnets for divers and snorkellers.
Zanzibar’s white sand beaches and warm azure waters provide the perfect place to relax, soak up the sun and take a break from busy sightseeing. Excellent hotels, lodges and private bungalows can be found along the coastline. Most locations are peaceful, with nearby beach bars or small eateries that serve freshly caught seafood and local vegetables and fruits.
There are so many incredible experiences to be had on Zanzibar island. Whether you’re here for a
fully-inclusive beach holiday, a dream honeymoon vacation, a relaxing break after a wildlife safari,
a Kilimanjaro climb, or a backpacking Tanzania adventure, Zanzibar is the perfect place.
